
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck near the eastern coast of Japan, prompting a tsunami warning for the region. According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred near the coasts of Aomori and Hokkaido on Monday, December 8.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake struck at around 11:15 pm local time (7:45 pm Indian Standard Time) at a depth of approximately 33 miles (53 km), about 44 miles (70 km) off the northern coast of Japan.
Following the quake, the Japanese agency issued a tsunami alert predicting waves up to 10 feet high along the affected coastline. The greatest risk is expected in Ishikawa Prefecture and nearby areas. The strong tremors caused widespread alarm throughout the region.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that safety inspections are underway at nuclear power plants in the area. Authorities have urged residents to move immediately to higher ground and stay away from coastal zones as a precaution. Emergency alerts are being broadcast continuously on television channels.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. Rescue and relief agencies remain on high alert and are actively monitoring the situation.
