New Delhi, February 20: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has praised the historic ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which has overturned most of the significant tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Ramesh took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express his views, stating, “Kudos to the U.S. Supreme Court for rejecting President Trump’s entire tariff strategy. Given its ideological framework, this is an extraordinary decision. The 6-3 ruling is decisive.”

He further noted that the decision, delivered on Friday, is considered a major blow to Trump’s economic agenda.

In response to the court’s ruling on Trump’s tariffs, Congress leader Pawan Khera commented on ‘X’, saying that haste is the work of the devil. He highlighted that the U.S. Supreme Court has annulled Trump’s so-called global tariffs. Khera suggested that if India had waited just 18 more days, it might not have been trapped in a one-sided anti-India trade deal.

He questioned why Prime Minister Modi made a late-night call to Washington on February 2 and why India abandoned its initial strategy of waiting for the Supreme Court’s decision.

The conservative-led court took the rare step of limiting the president’s executive powers. It declared that the president does not have the authority under the 1977 Emergency Act to impose broad import tariffs on trade partners, including India.

Politico described the 6-3 ruling as a significant rejection of a core component of Trump’s economic program.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, emphasized the constitutional limits of presidential powers. He stated, “The president claims extraordinary power to impose tariffs unilaterally in unlimited amounts, durations, and scopes. Given the breadth of this alleged authority, historical context, and constitutional considerations, he must demonstrate clear parliamentary permission to exercise it.”

He added that the 1977 law Trump relied on lacks necessary congressional approval.

According to U.S. media, the justices ruled that the president did not have the authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose such large tariffs.

The Hill noted that the court’s ruling on Friday rejected most of President Trump’s extensive tariffs, determining that his use of emergency laws to restructure global trade was illegal, thereby dismantling a key pillar of his economic strategy.

The justices dismissed Trump’s large tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which allows the president to regulate imports in response to “strange and extraordinary” national emergencies.
