New Delhi, July 23: Amid ongoing protests regarding the NEET paper leak, the Delhi Police has issued a clarification concerning recent news about the National Security Act (NSA). The police stated that no new powers have been granted under the NSA for action against protesters. This is part of a regular administrative procedure that has been in place for years and is renewed every three months.
On July 15, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi issued an order under Section 3(3) of the National Security Act, 1980. This order grants the Delhi Police Commissioner the authority to exercise powers under the NSA from July 19 to October 18.
During this period, if deemed necessary for national security or public order, the Delhi Police Commissioner may issue preventive detention orders against individuals under Section 3(2) of the NSA.
However, the Delhi Police clarified that this is not a new order. According to officials, this arrangement has been in effect for a long time and is routinely extended every three months.
In an official statement, the Delhi Police noted that some media outlets reported that special powers had been granted to the Delhi Police Commissioner under the NSA to manage protests led by the Cockroach Public Party (CJP).
The police refuted this claim, stating that the current renewal order was issued on July 7, 2026, prior to the commencement of the CJP protests, covering the period from July 19 to October 18, 2026.
Furthermore, the Delhi Police clarified that no special requests or separate orders have been issued in light of the ongoing movement.
