Botswana Presidents First Official Visit to China Focuses on Economic Cooperation

Botswanas President Mokgweetsi Masisi visits China, emphasizing economic ties and strategic partnerships during his inaugural trip.

Beijing, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has embarked on his inaugural state visit to China from October 12 to 17, following an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping. This visit marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations.

Starting his journey in Fujian Province, Masisi visited an exhibition focused on poverty alleviation in Ningde City. He later toured the Museum of the History of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing. During his visit, Masisi shared insights in an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG).

He praised Fujian’s rapid development, attributing its success to Xi Jinping’s leadership during his tenure. Masisi expressed Botswana’s desire to learn from China’s experiences to transform its own economy.

The two leaders agreed to elevate their countries’ relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Masisi reiterated Botswana’s strong commitment to the One-China principle, asserting that any challenge to China’s territorial integrity contradicts this principle, which Botswana will never accept.

Additionally, Masisi participated in a high-level economic, trade, and investment forum between Botswana and China. He noted that Chinese companies have shown significant interest in various projects and are expected to visit Botswana to finalize contracts. He commended China’s zero-tariff policy for Africa, which he believes has opened new opportunities for developing nations and strengthened South-South cooperation.

Masisi also appreciated the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping, describing them as vital for building a harmonious world. Under the framework of a shared future for China and Africa, Botswana aims to strengthen its collaboration with China.

He emphasized that China has never acted as an imperial power, valuing goodwill and mutual respect in its relations with sovereign nations.

The diamond industry plays a crucial role in Botswana’s economy, contributing nearly one-third of its GDP. Masisi acknowledged that while the diamond sector has historically supported economic growth, recent downturns necessitate a focus on diversifying the economy. He highlighted China’s 15th Five-Year Plan as a model for effective and rapid implementation of development strategies.
