China Maintains Grain Production Above 700 Million Tons for Two Consecutive Years

Chinas annual grain production has exceeded 700 million tons for two years, ensuring food security and self-sufficiency.

Beijing, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : China’s annual grain production has surpassed 700 million tons for the second consecutive year, as reported on October 16 during the main event of World Food Day 2026 in Hefei, Anhui Province. The country now boasts a per capita grain availability of over 500 kilograms, exceeding the global average.

This achievement underscores China’s fundamental self-sufficiency in grain and the security of its staple food supply, reinforcing the foundation of national food security. Liu Huanshin, director of the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, highlighted that China feeds nearly one-fifth of the world’s population while possessing less than 9% of the world’s arable land.

Liu described this as a significant accomplishment for China, contributing crucially to global food security. In recent years, the nation has not only increased its total grain production capacity but also strengthened its grain distribution system.

Furthermore, China has promoted the development of grain-related standards and enhanced international exchange and cooperation in this sector. Liu noted that China has established a comprehensive system for grain procurement, storage, and regulation, ensuring coordination throughout the entire process from production to sale. This framework provides a solid institutional foundation for maintaining stability in the grain market.

To support the entire food supply chain, China has developed and issued over 400 national standards and more than 300 industrial standards in the grain and oil sector. Additionally, the country has facilitated the creation and revision of 70 international standards, ten of which were developed under China’s leadership. These standards aim to streamline international grain trade and reduce waste and loss in the sector.
