Washington, 25 December – US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Canada, stating that if the country proceeds with its trade agreement with China, the United States will impose a 100 percent tariff on all goods imported from Canada. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged citizens to buy Canadian-made products and strengthen local industries.
Trade Deal with China Sparks Tensions
This warning comes shortly after Prime Minister Carney’s recent visit to Beijing, where Canada and China agreed on a trade arrangement. Under this deal, Canada agreed to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, while China consented to lower retaliatory taxes on Canadian agricultural exports. The agreement has sparked anger from President Trump, who expressed his disapproval on the social media platform Truth Social. He warned that the US would never accept Canada becoming a conduit for Chinese goods entering America.
Trump’s Concerns Over Canadian-Chinese Ties
President Trump further cautioned that if Canada continues its deal with China, it might gradually harm Canada’s business environment, society, and lifestyle. He made it clear that such developments would lead to the US imposing a full 100 percent tariff on all Canadian products. Relations between the US and Canada have been deteriorating since Trump’s return to the presidency, with the US leader previously making controversial remarks about Canada, including suggesting it become the 51st US state and disputing Greenland’s status.
Canada’s Response: ‘Buy Canadian’ Policy and Diversified Trade
In reaction to Trump’s threats, Prime Minister Carney has promoted the ‘Buy Canadian’ policy, encouraging citizens to support domestic products and industries. Sharing a video on the social media platform X, Carney appealed to Canadians to spend their money on Canadian companies and workers, emphasizing that the government is aligning its efforts accordingly.
Amid these tensions, Canada aims to reduce its economic dependence on the United States. The country has set a target to increase exports to China by 50 percent by 2030 and plans to expand trade relations with nations beyond the US, including a prospective visit to India by Prime Minister Carney. The ‘Buy Canadian’ initiative, launched in December 2025, focuses on bolstering the national economy and protecting it from external pressures.
The situation escalated further when Canada opposed President Trump’s plan to install a missile defence system in Greenland, deepening the diplomatic strain between the two neighbours.
