Trump Labels NATO as Paper Tiger, Questions Support from Allies

Washington, March 28: U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized NATO, calling it a “paper tiger” and questioning whether Washington should continue to defend allies who, in his view, have failed to support the U.S. when needed.

Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit in Miami, Trump stated that the alliance did not stand by the U.S. during critical times. He suggested a reassessment of American commitments to NATO, saying, “If they are not there for us, why should we be there for them?” He described NATO’s response as “a very big mistake.”

Trump referenced discussions with key European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, noting that offers of support only came after military actions had concluded. He quoted Macron as saying, “We will send ships as soon as the war is over.” Trump added, “I don’t need them after the war is over.”

He also criticized the UK’s response, pointing out that aircraft carriers would only be available weeks later. Trump mocked the delayed support, stating, “We will be there when the war is over.”

The President took aim at Germany as well, mentioning a statement from their leadership that the conflict was not their concern. He attributed the comment to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, saying, “It’s not our war; we have nothing to do with it.”

Trump asserted that the lack of support has reinforced his long-held belief about NATO. He remarked, “I have always said NATO is a paper tiger; we help NATO, but they will never help us.”

He indicated that this situation could save the U.S. a significant amount of money, as the country spends hundreds of billions of dollars on NATO each year.

However, Trump praised several Middle Eastern countries for their stronger support, stating they stood by the U.S. more firmly than NATO members. He concluded, “They stood with us more than NATO countries did,” adding that Washington received “tremendous support from countries outside the NATO region.”
