Washington, 2 January. Indian-American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam has stated that President Donald Trump has completely damaged the relationship between India and the United States. According to him, the weakening of ties between the world’s two largest democracies is harming the economic and strategic interests of both countries.

In an interview with a news agency, Suhas Subramanyam said, “The Trump administration has thoroughly spoiled the India-US relationship. It was an administration where, during his first term, President Trump had actually strengthened ties with Prime Minister Modi.”

He added that the current decline in relations is due to personal and policy differences. According to Subramanyam, Trump’s personal reasons regarding Prime Minister Modi are now damaging the strong economic relations that had been built over many years. This is affecting both countries adversely.

The congressman warned, “There is no sense in ending or damaging the relationship between us and India. If America has a great opportunity to strengthen relations with India, we can truly enhance our economic power and influence. Considering what is happening with China, India is a natural partner for us in many ways. India is one of the world’s largest democracies.”

He also stated that partnerships between the two countries can be increased in defence, economic, and technology sectors. He called the global supply chain shift a major opportunity. Referring to manufacturing and industrial cooperation, he said, “If companies want to move investments out of China, India is a natural partner in that effort.”

However, he noted that tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are harming these prospects. According to him, the administration’s statements on tariffs have weakened India-US economic relations. He said, “There are many people on both sides who support strong mutual relations. But when you look at the current Trump administration’s actions, it becomes very difficult.”

He expressed concerns about US foreign policy as well. He said the Trump administration’s promises to end wars and strengthen economic ties have not been fulfilled. Instead, the situation has worsened.

According to him, due to tariffs and rifts with allied countries, trust in the US has declined. Many countries no longer have the same confidence in America. Looking ahead, he said that Congress needs to repair the damaged relations of the past year, including those with India.

Recently passed National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) notes that defence, technology, and people-to-people contacts between India and the US have steadily increased over the past two decades. This includes trade, defence procurement, and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Experts believe that the India-US partnership plays a crucial role in balancing China’s growing influence. Therefore, the American Congress’s concern over the prolonged weakness in bilateral ties is being taken very seriously.
