Washington, March 24: Amid rising tensions between Iran and the U.S.-Israel alliance, Pakistan is stepping in to mediate between the two sides. The country is relaying messages from the U.S. to Iran and informing the U.S. of Iran’s responses. In this context, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asif Munir, over the phone.
According to the White House, the primary topic of discussion was the potential conflict with Iran. However, officials declined to provide further details, citing the sensitive nature of the conversation.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt previously stated that these discussions are delicate diplomatic matters, and the U.S. will not engage with the media regarding them.
Sources indicate that Munir presented Pakistan as a possible venue for talks between senior U.S. and Iranian officials.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif reached out to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, extending greetings for Eid-ul-Fitr and Nowruz, while expressing solidarity with the Iranian people.
Sharif noted that both parties discussed the serious situation in the Gulf region and agreed on the need to reduce tensions, enhance dialogue, and pursue diplomacy. He emphasized Pakistan’s role in fostering unity within the Islamic world and establishing peace in the region.
On Monday, Trump announced a five-day delay in military action following what he described as constructive discussions with Tehran. It remains unclear whether Pakistan’s mediation directly influenced Trump’s decision. Iran has denied direct talks with the U.S. but acknowledged receiving messages through some friendly nations.
Analysts suggest that this diplomatic effort is still in its early stages and cannot yet be considered a fully structured dialogue.
