Washington, Sept 10 (Kiran News): In a first-of-its-kind move, the Trump administration has launched legal action against pharmaceutical companies for misleading drug advertisements. The United States is one of only two countries in the world — along with New Zealand — that allows direct-to-consumer drug advertising.

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump signed a memorandum aimed at forcing drugmakers to comply with transparency laws in their advertising. Senior officials said the administration plans to issue around 100 warning letters daily to pharmaceutical companies.
Push for Transparency on Risks
According to an ABC News report, administration officials told reporters that the goal is to use existing laws to ensure consumers receive clear and accurate information, particularly about potential side effects. Officials highlighted the increasing promotion of drugs on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
Studies have shown that drug ads on social media often provide less information than a consultation with a physician. A 2015 study found that only one-third of posts mentioned potential risks.
A senior official said:
“There is widespread frustration over these misleading ads, especially the failure to adequately disclose side effects. These ads now dominate social media without proper warnings, and even online pharmacy promotions fail to meet the standards many drug companies follow.”
Levelling the Playing Field
Officials added that stricter enforcement will reduce “chaos” on social platforms and ensure a level playing field for companies. They described the move as the president’s “boldest step yet” to regulate the industry.
However, the crackdown falls short of an earlier pledge made by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who had said drug advertising on television should be banned entirely. Before taking office, Kennedy told a Trump campaign rally that he would recommend banning TV drug ads altogether to tackle what he described as an “epidemic of chronic illness.”
