Major Security Deployment for West Bengal Elections: 240,000 Paramilitary Personnel Mobilized

Kolkata, April 7: As West Bengal prepares for its upcoming assembly elections, security measures have been significantly heightened. This election sees the largest deployment of paramilitary forces in the state’s history, aimed at ensuring a peaceful and fair electoral process.

Approximately 2,400 paramilitary companies, totaling around 240,000 personnel, have been deployed. Notably, this number is more than double that of the previous elections, reflecting the administration’s serious approach to security this time around.

In addition, a record number of female security personnel have been assigned to election duties. Reports indicate that about 20,000 female paramilitary officers, equivalent to around 200 companies, will be on duty during the elections.

Sources reveal that various agencies, including the Election Commission, had informed the Home Ministry about the increased need for female security forces. This led to the decision for such a large-scale deployment of women in the security apparatus.

Regarding the election schedule, voting in West Bengal will occur in just two phases across the total of 294 seats. The first phase will take place on April 23 for 152 seats, while the second phase is set for April 29 for the remaining 142 seats. Counting and results will be announced on May 4.

It is also noteworthy that this election will have fewer phases compared to 2021, which will facilitate both voters and the administration. The code of conduct is already in effect across the state, and the Election Commission is maintaining oversight at all levels.

Additionally, on April 6, the Supreme Court directed the NIA to investigate an incident in Malda district, where seven judicial officers on SIR duty were reportedly held hostage for several hours at a BDO office in Kaliachowk.
