Agartala, April 1: The Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Agartala has made history by successfully performing two consecutive kidney transplants for the first time in the state. Officials announced this remarkable achievement on Tuesday.
Dr. Bidhan Goswami, the hospital superintendent, credited Chief Minister Manik Saha, a dental surgeon himself, for this success, highlighting his commitment to the health department.
With the completion of the sixth and seventh kidney transplants on Monday and Tuesday, the total number of successful procedures at this medical college has now reached seven.
Both donors and recipients are reported to be in stable condition. The recent transplants were conducted under the supervision of expert doctors from the Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, with assistance from specialists at a private hospital and research institute in Imphal, Manipur.
Dr. Goswami noted that previously, transplants were performed separately, but this marks the first time in the state that two successful transplants were conducted over two consecutive days, setting a new record.
On Monday, a 36-year-old man from Baikhora in South Tripura received a kidney from his 33-year-old childhood friend. The following day, a 33-year-old man from Champaknagar in West Tripura underwent a transplant with a kidney donated by his 59-year-old father.
According to hospital administration, all donors and recipients are currently stable and under medical supervision.
The operations were carried out by a team of doctors from the nephrology, urology, and anesthesia departments, with collaboration from Manipur specialists. Dr. Goswami emphasized the crucial role played by nursing staff and operating room technicians in this process.
The sixth transplant began on Monday morning and was completed in approximately six hours, while the seventh transplant started Tuesday morning and took around five hours to finish.
Officials stated that this achievement reflects the state government’s commitment to enhancing robust healthcare services.
It is noteworthy that the first kidney transplant in Tripura was performed on July 8, 2024, and the fifth was successfully completed on November 4, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Tripura government has sought guidance and support from AIIMS, New Delhi, to expand advanced healthcare services in the state. Last June, a four-member team led by AIIMS Director M. Srinivasan visited the Agartala Government Medical College, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, and other government health institutions to assess the state’s healthcare facilities, following a request from Chief Minister Manik Saha.
