Agartala, May 14: Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the Tripura government has prioritized enhancing and expanding healthcare services across the state. This initiative has led to an impressive 80% reduction in the number of patients referred outside the state for treatment.
Saha made these remarks while inaugurating the ‘International Nurses Day’ celebration organized by the Health Department at the Rabindra Shatavarshiki Bhavan in Agartala.
Paying tribute to Florence Nightingale, he described her as a symbol of humanitarian service, who elevated the nursing profession through compassion and dedication.
As the head of the Health Department, Saha stated that the state government has launched several key health projects aimed at strengthening medical services and ensuring better treatment facilities within Tripura.
He announced, “A medical university will soon be established in the state. Additionally, more super-specialty hospitals will be built. A new medical college will be set up in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region, along with a new eye hospital.”
Being a dental surgeon himself, Saha emphasized that these initiatives aim to reduce the need for patients to seek advanced treatment outside the state.
Highlighting the role of nurses in healthcare delivery, the Chief Minister noted that nurses are the backbone of the medical system, and their contributions are indispensable.
He remarked, “The nurses’ uniform symbolizes pride and responsibility. The more challenges they face, the more experienced and skilled they become, earning greater trust from patients.”
Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saha acknowledged that during this crisis, doctors and nurses served society like warriors.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining the health and well-being of healthcare workers.
The Chief Minister further stated that nursing education and employment opportunities in the state have significantly expanded. He mentioned that 153 nursing personnel have already been appointed, with recruitment for 100 additional positions set to begin soon.
The event was attended by Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte, Health Director Debashree Debbarma, Director of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine Anjan Das, Medical Education Director H.P. Sharma, and other senior officials.
