New Delhi, July 30: The decision to replace the traditional blue jersey of the Indian hockey team with a saffron one has sparked intense debate in political circles. Former Indian hockey captain Viren Rasquinha has expressed concern over this change. In contrast, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have supported the move, labeling it as a normal alteration. Meanwhile, opposition parties have raised questions, linking the decision to issues of symbolism and identity.
BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar stated that the government has the right to decide on color changes. “What if the color has changed? Once in power, they can do as they please,” he remarked. He noted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present in the house, and the response to the matter was provided by Union Minister Jitendra Singh as per the pre-arranged protocol.
Regarding the saffron color controversy, he commented, “This reflects a narrow mindset. What’s the problem if the jersey is saffron?”
Uttar Pradesh government minister Sanjay Nishad also supported the saffron color, asserting that India is the land of revolutionaries and that saffron is a vital part of the country’s cultural identity. He insisted that no one should object to this color.
On the other hand, Samajwadi Party MP Pushpendra Saroj questioned the proposed change, stating that blue has long been synonymous with Indian sports teams, especially in cricket and hockey. He emphasized that whenever the Indian team competes in major tournaments, the slogan “Bleed Blue” is chanted. According to him, blue has been a neutral and inspiring color, and such a change could lead to unnecessary controversy. The government should respect public sentiment and avoid viewing colors and symbols through a political lens.
Samajwadi Party leader Udayveer Singh also noted that the jersey worn by the Indian team for years has created an emotional bond with players and sports enthusiasts. However, he added that the Hockey India Federation should clarify the real reason behind this change.
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma viewed the issue as more than just a sports matter, accusing the BJP of diverting attention from its governance by focusing on issues related to symbols and identity. He claimed that such decisions are attempts to distract people from other pressing issues.
Amidst this controversy, Trinamool Congress MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad stated that regardless of whether the jersey color is orange, green, or any other shade, the real significance lies in the players’ performance. He noted that cricketers have played in white clothing for extended periods, and success is determined by on-field performance, not the color of the attire.
