Trinamool Congress Urges Chief Justice for Swift Hearing of Candidates Cases

Kolkata, March 28: The Trinamool Congress has expressed its concerns in a letter to Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Calcutta High Court. The party is worried about the status of 11 candidates whose cases have been sent for judicial review, and whose situations remain unclear.

The letter, penned by West Bengal’s state finance minister (independent charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya, includes a list of these candidates. The party has requested that the Chief Justice expedite the hearings for these cases.

Additionally, the letter urges the Chief Justice to intervene so that when the Election Commission releases the list of voters to be removed, the reasons for their removal are clearly stated.

The party has also demanded that the supplementary voter list be issued daily. The first list was released earlier this week, while the second list was expected on Friday.

As of the time of writing, neither the Election Commission nor the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal had clarified when the second list would be released.

It remains uncertain whether the second list will include names of cases up to Thursday night or if it will also cover those up to Friday evening.

According to sources from the CEO’s office, judicial scrutiny has been completed for approximately 36 lakh voters (about 60%) out of 60 lakh by Thursday night.

The final voter list for West Bengal (excluding these 60 lakh cases) was published on February 28. It was decided that supplementary lists would be released in accordance with the progress of the scrutiny.

Voters whose names are removed through the judicial process will have the opportunity to appeal. For this purpose, 19 appellate tribunals have been established where they can file their appeals.
