India Faces Bangladesh Challenge in SAFF U-20 Championship

Malé, March 28: The Indian football team, fresh from a stunning victory over Pakistan, is set to face Bangladesh in their final Group B match of the SAFF U-20 Championship at the National Football Stadium in Malé.

Despite already securing a spot in the semifinals, this match holds significant importance. India needs at least a draw to clinch the top position in Group B, while Bangladesh must win to achieve the same.

India’s head coach, Mahesh Gawali, expressed confidence following their performance against Pakistan. “We played well against Pakistan. Our game improved in the second half. Defensively, we were well-organized, and our goalkeeper made some crucial saves. Now, we look ahead. Every team is strong, and any team can win on any given day. We do not underestimate anyone,” he stated.

Having qualified, India views this match as an opportunity to refine their performance before the knockout stage. Despite the impressive scoreline against Pakistan, there were moments, especially in the first half, when India’s defense faced significant challenges. Pakistan managed to create several chances, requiring goalkeeper Suraj Singh Ahibam to make vital saves to maintain India’s lead.

Meanwhile, buoyed by their victory over Pakistan, Bangladesh enters this match with high confidence. They aim to avenge their loss to India in the final of the SAFF U-19 Championship 2025.

Bangladesh’s head coach, Mark Cox, emphasized the team’s preparation and unity while acknowledging the challenge posed by India. “We have been training for the past two weeks. The players have developed good synergy and understand each other well. We remain vigilant, as football has a way of bringing you down when you’re at your peak. India will always be a threat, but we are fully prepared to face the best teams,” he said.

An intriguing aspect of this match will be the showdown between India’s forward Omang Dodum and Bangladesh’s striker Ronan Sullivan, both of whom have scored two goals each so far. They will be eager to increase their tally before the knockout stage.

Dodum expressed satisfaction with his performance and aims to maintain his form against Bangladesh. “I am very happy with how I performed. I am grateful to my coaches and teammates. Our goal against Bangladesh is to secure three points and finish at the top of the group. I am looking forward to the next match,” he said.

Both teams are eyeing the top spot in Group B, making Saturday’s clash highly competitive.
