Imphal, August 21: Several district administrations in Manipur’s Imphal Valley have postponed or canceled training programs for enumerators and supervisors due to ongoing protests demanding an update to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
A senior official from the Manipur Home Department stated that the training was scheduled to commence on Thursday as part of the first phase of the 2027 Census.
Meanwhile, self-enumeration for Census 2027 began on August 17. The main house listing campaign will be conducted by enumerators from September 1 to September 30 this year.
The district officials from Jiribam, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching have either postponed or canceled the training for enumerators and supervisors under Census 2027.
However, similar training programs have already started in various districts of the state’s hilly regions.
The three-day training program for enumerators and supervisors working in the first phase of Census 2027 (house listing and housing census) was initiated under the guidance of the respective deputy commissioners, who also serve as the chief census officers for their districts.
The Justice and Fair Delimitation (JFD) group began its movement primarily in the Imphal Valley area from midnight on Monday. The aim of this movement is to update the NRC in Manipur before the 2027 Census. The 48-hour shutdown has severely disrupted daily life on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Various student and youth organizations, women’s groups, and civil society organizations are supporting this shutdown.
As part of their ongoing movement, the JFD has also announced a boycott of all government offices starting Thursday.
With the deployment of additional security forces, security measures have been tightened across large parts of the Imphal Valley, which includes six districts: Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Jiribam.
In the meantime, the state education department has announced that all educational institutions in the state will remain closed for three days starting Thursday due to the current law and order situation.
Considering the prevailing law and order conditions, the Governor of Manipur has declared that all schools and colleges affiliated with the Secondary Education Board, Higher Secondary Education Council, Central Board of Secondary Education, or any other institution will remain closed from Thursday, August 20, to Saturday, August 22.
The Manipur government has already supported the demand for an update to the NRC and has been consistently raising this issue with the central government.
A delegation of Manipur legislators is set to visit New Delhi soon to seek guidance from the central government and urge the initiation of the NRC update process in the state.
