Belagavi, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident in Belagavi, Karnataka, has left a family reeling after a fire ignited from a fridge explosion, claiming the lives of six individuals. The incident occurred on the night of September 16, during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
The family had celebrated the festival earlier that day and went to bed afterward. Initial investigations suggest that a short circuit may have caused the fire, which quickly spread throughout their home. Shortly after the flames erupted, a refrigerator reportedly exploded, exacerbating the situation.
Four family members died at the scene, identified as Sharda Damon, Bharti Damon, Priya Damon, and Ganga Damon. Two others, Gajanan Damon (61) and Roshan Damon (21), suffered severe burns and were rushed to a private hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries on Wednesday.
According to police reports, the family lived in a makeshift structure, and all were asleep when the fire broke out. The blaze was so intense that it reportedly reduced the fridge to the size of a small box, completely destroying the rest of the household items.
Following the incident, the Belagavi police commissioner visited the site to assess the situation. The Market Police have since registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the fire’s cause and the circumstances surrounding the fridge explosion. All family members were employed as laborers.
This incident is reminiscent of a previous fire in May in Bengaluru’s Nagarbhavi area, where one person died, and four others were injured due to a suspected short circuit. In another tragic event in 2025, five individuals lost their lives in a fire at a bar-restaurant due to serious safety and ventilation failures, leading to arrests of the building owners.
