Ujjain, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain celebrated Maha Ashtami on October 19, 2026, with a spectacular Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. A significant number of devotees gathered to witness this divine event. On this auspicious occasion, Baba Mahakal appeared before his followers in the form of a goddess.
Early Monday morning, the temple doors were opened to the sound of drums and traditional instruments after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerbhadra. Following the elaborate decoration and Bhasma Aarti, the devotees were granted darshan of Baba Mahakal. The temple echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal,” filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.
As the temple gates opened, the rituals began with the ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahakal using Panchamrit, a sacred mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. The first bell was rung, and Har Om was offered as part of the worship. After the Kapoor Aarti, Baba donned a crown, and the Bhasma Aarti was performed amidst the sounds of cymbals, drums, and conch shells.
On Maha Ashtami, Baba Mahakal was adorned in a divine form with silver and gold ornaments. Many devotees, who had queued since the night before, eagerly awaited the opportunity to witness the Bhasma Aarti.
Traditionally, the Mahavir Akhara offers the Bhasma Aarti to Baba Mahakal. It is believed that after this offering, Baba Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees. This event draws numerous pilgrims to the sacred city of Ujjain, eager to partake in the spiritual experience.
