Kolasib, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : In a tragic incident in Kolasib district, Mizoram, three workers lost their lives due to electrocution while removing a power pole during the expansion of National Highway-306. Among the deceased was a 16-year-old boy, and three other workers sustained injuries.
The accident occurred on a Saturday afternoon in the Sethon area. Six workers were engaged in the removal of a power pole as part of a four-lane highway project managed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
According to police reports, two of the deceased were from Myanmar, while the third hailed from Manipur. The injured workers have been hospitalized for treatment.
Survivors of the incident informed police that power supply had been cut off from three different locations before they began work. However, they were unable to explain how electricity was restored to the line afterward.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the workers may have mistakenly turned off the wrong gang-operated air brake switch after the power was cut. This error led to contact with a high-voltage line during the pole removal, resulting in the electrocution.
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety protocols followed during electrical work on the highway project. Police have yet to receive any formal complaints, but an unnatural death case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing to determine the sequence of events leading to the incident.
National Highway-306 serves as a crucial roadway connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country through Assam, and the expansion work is currently underway.
