Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Lives of Four Girls During Jitiya Festival in Bihar

East Champaran, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident occurred in Banakat village, located in the East Champaran district of Bihar, during the Jitiya festival on Friday. Four young girls drowned while bathing in a local pond, sparking chaos among the villagers who had gathered to celebrate the festival.

According to officials, many women and children from the village went to the pond for a ritual bath. During this time, the four girls reportedly ventured into a deeper section of the pond and drowned. When they did not surface after a while, villagers raised the alarm, prompting a large crowd to rush to the pond.

Local residents quickly entered the water to search for the girls, managing to retrieve all four. They were then taken to the community health center in Paharpur, where doctors pronounced them dead.

The deceased have been identified as 13-year-old Sonamati, 10-year-old Phoolmati, 10-year-old Sonali Kumari, and 12-year-old Pratima Kumari, all from the village.

Following the incident, police from the Paharpur station arrived to investigate. They spoke with the families of the girls and other villagers to gather information. The bodies were taken into custody and sent to Motihari for post-mortem examination.

Authorities confirmed that necessary legal procedures are underway. The mood in Banakat village shifted from festive to somber as news of the tragedy spread. The families of the girls, along with other villagers, are in shock.

In the wake of the incident, local residents have called for enhanced safety measures around the pond. They are urging the installation of warning signs near dangerous areas to alert visitors about potential hazards. Additionally, they are requesting barricades to be erected around sensitive sections of the pond to prevent future accidents.

Meanwhile, the East Champaran district administration has initiated compensation procedures for the families of the deceased girls.
