Bengaluru, August 7: Two Nepalese women reportedly took their own lives in Yelahanka, Bengaluru, after facing opposition from their families regarding their relationship. Police revealed on Friday that the women were prevented from living together. Initial investigations indicate that both women were in a relationship and felt hopeless due to societal and familial pressure.
According to police, the deceased women were related and had grown up together in Nepal. They have been identified as Sirjana (22) and Rita (23). Investigators noted that they studied together and had become very close since childhood. Over time, their bond developed into love. It is reported that villagers questioned their relationship, subjected them to taunts, and pressured them regarding their closeness.
In an attempt to separate them, relatives brought the women to Bengaluru about a month ago. However, instead of allowing them to stay together, families allegedly placed them in different areas. Rita was living in Fraser Town, while Sirjana was kept several kilometers away in Jakkur.
Despite being apart, reports suggest that they continued to meet three to four times a week, often gathering for lunch at a relative’s home. During these meetings, family members allegedly discussed plans to marry them off to men, insisting that society would never accept their partnership.
Initial information suggests that emotional distress from separation, pressure to marry, and lack of societal acceptance contributed to the tragic decision made by the two women.
On Thursday, their bodies were discovered hanging from a tree in front of Kisar Hotel on Jakkur Road in Yelahanka. Initially, the victims were identified as Sirjana (24) and Rita (24). The police are currently verifying their exact ages and other personal details.
According to police, the women had arrived in Bengaluru from Nepal about a month ago and were staying at Sirjana’s brother’s house in Yelahanka before being sent to different locations. The incident came to light when passersby noticed the bodies hanging from the tree and alerted the police. Officers from Yelahanka police station quickly arrived at the scene, conducted an initial investigation, and sent the bodies for autopsy.
A case has been registered, and further investigations are ongoing. Police are recording statements from family members and relatives to understand the sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the deaths.
Investigators noted that the details regarding the women’s relationship and the family’s alleged opposition are based on initial inquiries, and more evidence is being gathered.
