Tragic Coal Mine Explosion in Meghalaya Claims 16 Lives

Shillong, February 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed deep sorrow on Thursday over a coal mine explosion in the East Jaintia Hills district that claimed at least 16 lives. He announced a thorough investigation into the incident to identify those responsible.

In a statement released on the social media platform X, Sangma extended his condolences to the grieving families and affirmed that the state government stands firmly with those affected by this tragedy.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident at the coal mine in East Jaintia Hills. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate disaster,” he stated.

Sangma emphasized that the Meghalaya government has ordered a comprehensive investigation and made it clear that those found guilty will face punishment.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that there will be no leniency in matters related to public safety, stressing that the state will not compromise on the protection of human life.

“The administration will ensure all necessary legal and administrative measures based on the investigation’s findings,” he added.

Sangma further stated that during this time of grief, the state stands in solidarity with all affected individuals.

Police officials reported on Thursday that at least 16 bodies have been recovered following a devastating explosion in a suspected illegal coal mine in the Thangskhu area of East Jaintia Hills, marking one of the deadliest mining accidents in recent years.

East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar confirmed the death toll, stating that rescue teams have recovered 16 bodies from the site so far.

Kumar noted that the search and rescue operation is still ongoing.
