Mumbai, August 23: A tragic incident occurred in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai, as preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi were underway. On Saturday night, a 22-foot tall idol of Lord Ganesh, known as ‘Bhuleshwar cha Raja,’ fell while being transported. The idol lost balance and collapsed, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuries to five others.
According to reports, the massive idol was being carried from Byculla to Bhuleshwar when it suddenly fell about 50-60 meters before reaching the mandap around 10:30 PM. Seven people were injured in the incident. Fire brigade teams, BMC officials, and Mumbai police quickly arrived at the scene to rescue the injured and transport them to a nearby hospital.
At the hospital, two individuals were declared dead, identified as 33-year-old Sanket Nevashe and 30-year-old Brijesh Hemant Joshi. The injured include Vaibhav Ghenand (38), Pawan Chaurasia (25), Lavanya Ganer (5), Divya Ganer (7), and Kunal Kashid (26), all of whom are receiving treatment.
It is noteworthy that Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated grandly across Maharashtra, including Mumbai. Preparations for the festival, which begins next month, are already in full swing. During this ten-day festival, Ganesh idols are installed in homes and public pandals, with processions held for transporting the idols to immersion sites, attracting large crowds.
This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will commence on September 14. Reports indicate that there are 10,600 public Ganesh mandals in Mumbai, but only 2,500 have received approval for the ten-day celebration. It is estimated that approximately 2.8 million Ganesh idols will be installed throughout Maharashtra.
