Top Maoist Leader Prashant Bose Passes Away in RIMS Hospital

Ranchi, April 3: Prashant Bose, also known as ‘Kishan Da,’ a prominent leader of the banned Maoist organization CPI (Maoist), passed away on Friday at RIMS Hospital in Ranchi. The 75-year-old was incarcerated in the Saraikela Jail when his health suddenly deteriorated, necessitating his admission for treatment.

According to jail authorities, Bose began experiencing severe breathing difficulties around 6 AM on Friday. He was swiftly transported to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) under tight security. A specialized team of doctors initiated treatment; however, his condition did not improve, and around 10 AM, they confirmed his death. In light of the sensitive nature of the case, both jail and hospital administrations have appointed a magistrate to oversee the proceedings.

Bose was regarded as the second most influential figure in the Maoist organization, following General Secretary Nambala Keshav Rao. He was a key member of the Central Committee and Politburo, also serving as the secretary of the Eastern Regional Bureau. Originally from West Bengal, he was known in the Naxalite corridors by the aliases ‘Manish’ and ‘Buddha.’

As one of the top leaders of the Naxalite movement, Bose played a crucial role in strategic decision-making within the organization. He was arrested on November 12, 2021, near the Kandra Toll Bridge in the Saraikela-Kharsawan district alongside his wife, Sheila Marandi. At the time of his arrest, a reward of one crore rupees was announced for his capture. Security agencies reported that he masterminded over 200 Naxalite incidents across several states, including Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Active for nearly four decades, Bose was considered the ‘think tank’ of the organization. Since his arrest, he had been incarcerated and struggled with age-related health issues, reportedly being over 80 years old. Due to his prolonged imprisonment and advancing age, he suffered from various physical ailments. Following his death, security agencies and police administration are on high alert. Legal proceedings are underway after the completion of the post-mortem process.
