TNVP Exits DMK Alliance Over Seat Sharing Discontent

Chennai, March 22: In a significant setback for the DMK-led alliance ahead of the assembly elections, T. Velmurugan, the founder-leader of the Tamil Nadu Vazhvuirmai Party (TNVP), announced on Sunday that his party would exit the coalition. This decision stems from dissatisfaction with the seat-sharing arrangement and the state government’s inaction on key social justice issues.

Velmurugan had previously won the Panruti seat in Cuddalore district under the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol during the 2021 assembly elections. This time, he sought the allocation of at least two seats and the right to contest under a separate party symbol. However, reports indicate that the DMK only offered him one seat, leading to unrest within the TNVP.

The discord intensified when Velmurugan presented a set of ten demands to the DMK leadership, stating that his party would consider remaining in the alliance only if these demands were accepted and implemented. Key demands included 10.5% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community, prioritizing 100% Tamils in state government jobs, and conducting a caste-based census in Tamil Nadu.

In announcing the exit from the alliance, Velmurugan accused the DMK government of consistently ignoring the issues raised by his party, both inside and outside the assembly. He told reporters, “We have presented several demands to the government, but none have been taken seriously. The government has changed, but the ground reality remains the same.”

Criticizing the DMK, he stated that the party had not taken concrete steps to conduct a caste-based census and questioned its commitment to social justice. He remarked, “What has existed until now is the rule of dominant classes. How can the DMK claim to uphold social justice?”

Clarifying his party’s future political stance, Velmurugan ruled out any possibility of aligning with the BJP-led coalition. Instead, he indicated that the TNVP would explore alliances with parties willing to accept and implement its demands. He noted that discussions in this regard are already underway, and a final decision on the alliance would be announced soon.
