New Delhi, March 22: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is known as the most lucrative cricket league in the world. Players earn more in this league than in any other. However, some players receive hefty fees yet fail to deliver performances that match their salaries. Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested that franchises should have the right to reduce player salaries.
Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel that if a player does not fulfill their designated role, franchises should be allowed to cut their salaries.
He cited the example of Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for ₹25.2 crores. Green is expected to contribute significantly with both bat and ball, taking on a role similar to that of Andre Russell.
However, Green has limited bowling experience in the Ashes and the T20 World Cup 2026, raising doubts about his ability to bowl four overs during the league.
Ashwin remarked, “If a player cannot bowl four overs, the franchise should have the right to deduct their pay. If there are any restrictions, it should be reflected in their contract.”
He referenced KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, stating that it would be disappointing if a team owner spends millions yet fails to receive full contributions from a player.
“When you buy a player at the auction, you expect them to perform in both batting and bowling. If there are restrictions on bowling, the team should be allowed to reduce their salary,” Ashwin added.
Ashwin’s comments could ignite a new debate in the league. There are several all-rounders who primarily focus on batting, with minimal contributions as bowlers. Alongside Cameron Green, Australia’s T20 captain Mitchell Marsh, who is part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is another prominent example.
