Kolkata, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Kolkata High Court has revoked an eviction notice served to the office of Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and MP from Diamond Harbour. This decision was made by a single-judge bench on Wednesday, addressing a notice issued by the West Bengal Fire Services Department for the office located on Camac Street in central Kolkata.
Previously, the court had placed an interim stay on the eviction notice. During a fresh hearing on Wednesday, Justice Krishna Rao annulled the notice, emphasizing the need for proper procedures. The court directed the fire department to issue prior notice to the Trinamool Congress regarding the inspection date of the Camac Street office.
Justice Rao ruled that the fire department must inform the party about the fire safety measures applicable to the office. Following this, the Trinamool Congress is expected to implement the necessary safety protocols as per the guidelines provided. The judge also noted that if the party fails to comply with these directives, the fire department may take appropriate legal action.
Abhishek Banerjee’s office has been embroiled in controversy since last month when employees from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and police removed an illegal billboard from the building’s roof. This incident led to clashes between Trinamool Congress workers, including Banerjee and other prominent leaders, and the KMC staff and police.
Subsequently, three FIRs were filed against Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Humayun Kabir, and Baishwanar Chatterjee at the local Shakespeare Sarani police station. In response, officials from the fire department conducted a fire safety audit of the office, which resulted in the issuance of the eviction notice.
