TMC MP Abhishek Banerjees PA Sumit Roy Sent to CID Custody in Land Scam Case

Kolkata, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Sumit Roy, the personal assistant to Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, has been remanded to custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a major land scam in Salboni, West Midnapore. A local court ordered the eight-day CID custody on Friday.

Roy was arrested on Thursday afternoon at Banerjee’s residence on Kalighat Road in Kolkata, just hours after the Supreme Court revoked his interim protection from police action in this case.

On Friday morning, CID officials first took Roy for a medical examination at the state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital in South Kolkata before presenting him at the district court in West Midnapore.

During the court hearing, government lawyer Nazim Habib confirmed that Roy faces multiple charges. He also mentioned that a petition had been filed regarding Roy’s physical condition, along with a request to allow his lawyers to be present during the interrogation. The court has asked Roy to provide the names of two lawyers, after which it will decide on the request. Notably, no bail application has been filed on his behalf.

Roy is considered the main accused in the Salboni land scam. His anticipatory bail plea was previously rejected by the Calcutta High Court, prompting him to seek relief from the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Venkata Subba Rao Mohana, indicated that Roy had not cooperated adequately with the investigation process. His arrest comes at a time when Abhishek Banerjee is abroad for eye treatment.
