Kolkata, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata’s political landscape is currently buzzing with developments surrounding Humayun Kabir, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and MLA from Debra. Kabir has received a notice to appear for questioning in connection with a recent incident involving the alleged illegal removal of billboards at the TMC’s Kamal Street office.
On September 6, police teams from the Shakespeare Sarani police station visited Kabir’s residence in South Kolkata’s Kasba to deliver the notice. The notice required him to report to the investigating officers by noon on September 9. However, Kabir informed the authorities that he would be available for questioning on September 7 at 1:30 PM.
Sources indicate that police had attempted to deliver the notice on two prior occasions, but Kabir was not at home. It was only on the third attempt that the notice was successfully handed over.
Speaking to reporters after receiving the notice, Kabir accused officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) of attempting to remove billboards without prior notice or following proper procedures. He stated, “Now, cases have been filed against us.”
Last week, TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien, and Banerjee’s personal assistant, Sumit Roy, were questioned at the Shakespeare Sarani police station regarding the same incident. Sumit Roy has been called back for further questioning on September 7.
In a related development, the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Department has instructed the Mamata Banerjee faction of the TMC to vacate their office on Kamal Street. This order follows the discovery of serious fire safety violations on the seventh and eighth floors of the building.
The incident that sparked this controversy occurred on August 27 when KMC officials, accompanied by police, attempted to remove billboards from the Kamal Street office. TMC workers, led by Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, and other leaders, reportedly protested, leading to clashes between demonstrators and police.
According to the FIR filed at the Shakespeare Sarani police station, TMC workers are accused of assaulting on-duty police officers and behaving inappropriately towards a female officer. The FIR names Humayun Kabir, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, and Baishwanar Chatterjee as defendants, and police have arrested 14 individuals in connection with the case.
