Kolkata, August 16: A suspected suicide note has emerged in the case of Ashish Banerjee, the former Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly. Police reported that his body was discovered hanging at the TMC office, along with the note.
The handwritten note, written in Bengali, expresses regret about his political career. Banerjee stated, “Entering politics was a mistake, and I have never been involved in corruption throughout my political journey.”
In the note, he elaborated, “I have been in politics since my student days. I was never part of any corruption. I served as the General Secretary of the student union at Burdwan University without engaging in corrupt practices. Political debates have occurred, but they never turned into enmity before. Although I could not accept all the wrong decisions made by my party, I also could not voice my opposition. I have never taken a single penny in exchange for any work throughout my life.”
The note further claimed, “My own party deprived me of all rights in the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA) and accused me of being undermined through various actions.”
Banerjee wrote, “Apart from attending general meetings at TRDA, I had no other responsibilities. I was not part of the tender committee. I had no authority to sign checks. I was not involved in approving any project plans or issuing no-objection certificates. No one ever discussed these matters with me. I condemn all actions taken to defame me. Today, it feels like entering politics was a mistake. I advise my sons not to enter politics; they should continue with their jobs.”
Former Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee was found dead near his home in Rampurhat at the TMC office on Sunday. He was a former MLA from the Trinamool Congress representing the Rampurhat constituency in Birbhum district.
Currently, the police have initiated an investigation into the incident, working to determine the authenticity of the suicide note.
