The Truth About Teeth Whitening: Benefits and Risks of Home Remedies

New Delhi, August 14: White and shiny teeth are desirable for many. Clean teeth enhance facial beauty and boost confidence. This is why numerous home remedies for quick teeth whitening are circulating on social media. Some suggest using baking soda, while others recommend lemon, turmeric, or vinegar. Many videos even claim that teeth discoloration can be resolved in just a few minutes.

However, changing the color of teeth is not that simple. Some home ingredients may temporarily reduce surface stains, but they do not whiten teeth from within. Therefore, it is essential to understand why teeth change color and how different home remedies affect them.

The most common reason for yellowing teeth is dietary habits. Substances like tea, coffee, tobacco, and carbonated drinks contain pigments that adhere to the enamel surface of teeth. If proper oral hygiene is not maintained, these pigments can turn into permanent yellow or brown stains.

As people age, it is also normal for teeth to change color. Teeth have a strong outer layer called enamel, which thins over time. Beneath it lies a layer called dentin, which is naturally light yellow. When enamel wears down, dentin becomes more visible, leading to a yellow appearance. In such cases, merely cleaning surface stains will not result in completely white teeth.

Baking soda is commonly found in many toothpaste brands designed for cleaning teeth. It can help gently remove some surface stains but does not alter the natural color of teeth. Some individuals excessively rub baking soda on their teeth, which can wear down the outer layer. This may increase sensitivity to hot and cold stimuli. Thus, considering baking soda as a miraculous home remedy for teeth whitening is misleading.

On the other hand, lemon and vinegar can be harmful to teeth. These acidic substances gradually weaken the outer enamel. If someone frequently applies them to their teeth or rubs them, it can damage the enamel. Once enamel deteriorates, it cannot regenerate. This weakening can lead to increased sensitivity, and the underlying yellow layer may become more visible. In the quest for whiter teeth, one might inadvertently enhance their yellow appearance.

There are scientifically proven methods to maintain white teeth. Many effective whitening products contain a substance called peroxide. This ingredient targets the particles that cause teeth to appear yellow, breaking them down into smaller components.

Properly formulated whitening strips and gels available in the market can show gradual results. Additionally, professional whitening under a dentist’s supervision is generally safer and more effective.
