This insight was shared during the launch of the book titled “Unmanned Aerial Systems: Transforming Contemporary Air Warfare” at an Indian Air Force event on Monday. Amid rapid technological advancements in the aerospace sector, this significant publication focuses on unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The event took place at the Air Force Auditorium, where Dr. Samir VK Kamath, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), unveiled the book in the presence of senior Air Force officials. Authored by Group Captain (Retd) D.K. Pandey, an experienced expert in air defense and strategic analysis, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of unmanned systems in modern warfare, drawing from his extensive military experience and research.
The book highlights that the evolution of air power has always been inspired by technological innovations, such as jet engines and precision weapons. In this context, UAS represents a new turning point. These systems are no longer limited to surveillance; they now perform complex tasks such as attack, electronic warfare, and strategic resistance as autonomous platforms.
According to Dr. Pandey, the real strength of UAS lies in altering the “kill chain” and enhancing battlefield clarity. Through continuous surveillance (ISR) and algorithm-based target acquisition, these systems are changing the nature of military operations, generating significant impact even with limited resources. This applies to both counter-terrorism operations and high-intensity conventional warfare. The book is divided into three main sections.
The first section discusses technological advancements and the superiority of manned versus unmanned platforms. The second section explains the proliferation of UAS in India and its neighboring regions, particularly in the context of disputed borders and gray-zone warfare. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Pandey has previously served as a Master Fighter Controller in air defense and has led six air defense units.
