The Inspiring Journey of Producer Sardar Singh Suri: From Taxi Driver to Filmmaker

Mumbai, April 18: The film industry is filled with stories of struggle and success, but some tales resonate deeply. One such inspiring yet bittersweet story is that of producer Sardar Singh Suri, who gave actor Prem Chopra his first major break. His journey from taxi driver to filmmaker is a testament to hard work, passion, and sacrifice. By selling his three taxis, he produced the hit film “Eh Darti Punjab Di,” which won nine awards. Despite this success, he faced financial hardships afterward. Sardar Singh Suri’s life story is nothing short of a cinematic script.

Despite creating a film that won nine awards, he could not afford a ticket to the award ceremony due to financial constraints. Originally from Rawalpindi, Sardar Singh Suri moved to Punjab and then to Mumbai after the partition. He began his life as a taxi driver and, through hard work, expanded from one taxi to three. However, he always dreamed of something bigger. His passion for filmmaking drove him to sell all three taxis to fund the Punjabi film “Eh Darti Punjab Di.”

This film marked Prem Chopra’s debut as a hero, earning him significant recognition. The film was a massive success, winning nine awards. However, behind this success lay a painful truth. One of his partners defrauded him, preventing Sardar Singh Suri from receiving his rightful share of the profits. The financial crisis was so severe that, despite the accolades, he could not even buy a ticket to attend the award ceremony.

Following this incident, he distanced himself from filmmaking. Recently, at a memorial service held at the Four Bangla Gurudwara Sahib in Mumbai on the anniversary of Sardar Singh Suri’s passing, Prem Chopra emotionally recalled, “I can never forget Sardar Suri. He gave me my first big break. He was not just a producer but a very kind and genuine person. His life is a perfect example of struggle, simplicity, and hard work. His journey will continue to inspire future generations.”

Prem Chopra reminisced about the time when film budgets were low, and artists earned little, yet making films was a joyous experience. He stated, “Hearing the song from that film after so many years brought back all the memories.”

Sardar Singh Suri was not just a filmmaker; he also played an active role in social and religious initiatives. He significantly contributed to the construction of the Four Bangla Gurudwara Sahib in Mumbai, which remains a major center of faith for the Sikh community today.
