
New Delhi, February 27: During spacewalks, astronauts step outside the International Space Station or spacecraft to perform critical tasks. Their primary shield of safety is the space suit. In essence, the space suit is not just an outfit; it is a sophisticated personal spacecraft. It creates an impenetrable barrier for astronauts against the harsh and dangerous conditions of space.
The space suit is the most crucial component of space travel. It ensures the astronaut’s safety in the extreme conditions of space. There is no air, temperatures can be extremely hot or cold, and intense sunlight and radiation pose significant threats. Tiny particles of dust can travel at bullet speed and cause injury. The space suit protects against all these dangers. It supplies oxygen, expels carbon dioxide, regulates temperature, provides drinking water, and allows astronauts to work while floating in space.
A unique feature of the space suit is that it is made up of multiple layers, each serving a specific purpose. The chest piece, known as the hard upper torso, is rigid and connects to the helmet, arms, and backpack. The arms and gloves provide flexibility for ease of movement. The helmet protects the head and features a visor coated with a metal layer to shield the eyes from bright sunlight. The legs and boots cover the feet and assist in walking on various surfaces. Additionally, there is a liquid cooling and ventilation garment worn underneath the suit, covering the entire body with tubes that circulate cool water to keep astronauts comfortable.
The space suit also includes a portable life support system, resembling a backpack. This is considered the most vital part of the suit. It contains oxygen, batteries, a fan, a water tank, and a carbon dioxide removal system. This backpack supplies power and breathable air to the suit. Attached to it is a small jetpack called a Safer, equipped with small thrusters. If an astronaut drifts away from the station, the Safer aids in their return. With the suit, astronauts can remain safe during a spacewalk for 6 to 8 hours or longer.
For launch and landing, astronauts wear the orange Advanced Crew Escape Suit and the Sokol suit. NASA is developing new suits for the Artemis and Mars missions. These suits will be more flexible, lightweight, dustproof, and durable. Given Mars’ higher gravity, the weight and design of the suits will differ. The new suits will provide astronauts with greater freedom and ease of work on rough surfaces.
