Akali Dal Demands Resignation of Punjab CM Over Activists Death

The Akali Dal calls for Punjab CM Bhagwant Manns resignation following the death of activist Parminder Jhota, raising concerns over law and order.

Chandigarh, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : The Shiromani Akali Dal is intensifying its campaign ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, focusing on a new manifesto. Senior party spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kaler announced that the manifesto committee is actively engaging with various groups to gather input, including meetings with lawyers and government employees.

Kaler has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in light of the recent death of activist Parminder Jhota, who had been vocal against drug abuse. He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party’s response to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) process and stated that decisions regarding alliances for the 2027 elections would be made by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal and the core committee.

Kaler emphasized that the Akali Dal’s manifesto will reflect the aspirations of the people of Punjab. Under the leadership of senior leader Balwinder Singh Bhundar, the committee is engaging with various sectors to understand the pressing issues facing the state. Punjab is currently grappling with economic challenges and law enforcement problems, with industries moving out of the state. Thus, it is essential to address the real concerns and expectations of the populace in the manifesto.

During the meeting with lawyers, the party aims to discuss their challenges and potential initiatives if the Akali Dal returns to power. Kaler highlighted that the payment of Dearness Allowance (DA) is a significant concern for government employees, many of whom have resorted to protests to voice their demands.

Kaler made serious allegations against CM Mann regarding the circumstances surrounding Jhota’s death. He pointed out that Jhota’s father publicly stated that the family faced pressure. Kaler questioned why the safety of those speaking out against drug abuse is not being ensured, especially when the government claims to be combating the issue.

Jhota had raised concerns about Ashwini in 2023, after which multiple cases were filed against him. Kaler alleged that individuals involved in the drug trade are being protected. He reiterated the call for the Chief Minister’s resignation on moral grounds, citing instances of police action and alleged mistreatment of those addressing drug-related issues.

The spokesperson noted a disconnect between the government’s claims regarding the anti-drug campaign and the actual situation on the ground. He also referred to serious questions raised by court comments on the matter. Kaler accused the Aam Aadmi Party of a double standard regarding the SIT, stating that party representatives attended related meetings without raising objections at the time. He praised the role of the Chief Electoral Officer in Punjab, asserting that the SIT process has been conducted transparently, and questioned the motives behind raising the issue in the Assembly now.

Regarding potential alliances for the 2027 Assembly elections, Kaler indicated that the party is still deliberating its electoral strategy. He clarified that decisions on whether to ally with regional or national parties or contest independently will be based on discussions within the core committee and the authority granted to Sukhbir Singh Badal. It is premature to discuss seat-sharing arrangements at this stage.
