Hyderabad, April 16: Telangana’s Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging the removal of BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s objectionable remarks regarding the formation of Telangana from parliamentary proceedings.
In his letter, Prabhakar expressed strong disapproval of Surya’s comments made during the discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill. He stated that the MP compared the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the creation of Telangana to the partition of India and the formation of Pakistan. This comparison is not only factually incorrect but also highly insensitive and inappropriate in terms of parliamentary decorum.
Prabhakar emphasized, “This comparison is not only factually inconsistent but also extremely insensitive and inappropriate in the context of parliamentary discourse.” He asserted that the formation of Telangana was the result of a democratic and constitutional process, reflecting the legitimate aspirations of the state’s people. He noted that equating this process with a violent and traumatic event like the partition undermines its dignity and disregards the sentiments of the people of Telangana.
The minister further stated that such comparisons are unnecessary and pose a risk of increasing regional animosity. They misrepresent historical and constitutional facts and weaken the fundamental spirit of democracy, which is unity and cooperative federalism.
Prabhakar urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to remove the statement from the parliamentary proceedings and directed that the concerned MP should unconditionally apologize to both the Lok Sabha and the people of Telangana. Additionally, he called for appropriate action against Tejasvi Surya, including the potential revocation of his Lok Sabha membership.
