Batala, April 16: In a significant move towards transformation, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated development projects worth ₹177 crore in the historic city of Batala on Thursday. These initiatives focus on extensive infrastructure expansion, while Mann also delivered a sharp political critique of previous governments during the event.
The projects include ₹95.72 crore allocated for municipal corporation works, ₹16.05 crore from the mandi board, and ₹65.09 crore for road construction by the public works department. Additionally, new repair projects worth ₹42.56 crore and ₹34.97 crore are also part of this development plan.
This campaign encompasses the construction of new bridges, a modern bus stand to alleviate traffic congestion, and a new police line costing ₹14.81 crore.
CM Mann described this development initiative as a decisive change from the past, asserting that the people of Punjab ended the “loot of three generations of Akali-Congress” in 2022 and will not allow their return in 2027. He accused previous administrations of deliberately weakening laws related to ‘beadbi’ (sacrilege) to protect themselves.
Addressing the gathering, Mann stated, “The Akalis intentionally created weak laws against beadbi to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime would not face punishment.”
He further remarked, “These leaders feared that they too might be punished for their crimes, which is why they kept the laws weak.”
The Chief Minister revealed that the state government has passed the Jagat Jyot Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which includes stringent penalties for cases of beadbi.
He emphasized, “Incidents of beadbi against Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji were part of a deep conspiracy to disrupt peace, brotherhood, and communal harmony in the state.”
Mann stressed that this new law will ensure strict action against offenders. He stated, “No one found guilty of this unforgivable crime will be spared, setting a precedent for others.”
He added, “If Shri Guru Granth Sahib is not safe in the state, then nowhere else can be safe,” calling this law a historic step towards curbing incidents of beadbi.
Mocking the Akali Dal’s so-called ‘Punjab Bachao Yatra,’ CM Mann said, “The true name of this facade is ‘Parivar Bachao Yatra,’ as their entire focus is on protecting their family interests.”
He challenged the Akali leadership, asking, “After looting the state for 15 years, who are they now trying to save Punjab from?”
The Chief Minister accused the Akalis of ruthlessly plundering the state, hurting the sentiments of Punjabis, and providing protection to various mafias.
