Karnataka BJP Celebrates Womens Reservation Bill as a Historic Milestone

Bengaluru, April 16: The Karnataka BJP has hailed the central government’s move to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as a “historic day written in golden letters.”

During a media interaction at the BJP’s state office, Jagannath Bhavan, senior party leader and MLC Bharti Shetty expressed that the government’s efforts towards women’s reservation have sparked a wave of joy among women across the nation, marking a day that should be recorded in history.

Shetty highlighted that women constitute nearly 50% of India’s population of approximately 1.4 billion and have long awaited this decision.

She noted that the reservation for women in local bodies began in 1992, while the Women’s Reservation Bill was first introduced in 1996. Since then, several attempts have been made to pass it up to 2023.

Shetty recalled that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee made four attempts to bring this bill forward, but it failed to pass due to a lack of support from the opposition. Similarly, during Sonia Gandhi’s leadership of the UPA, there were high hopes for the bill, but it did not receive approval.

She mentioned that a significant movement in support of this bill saw over 1,000 participants from Karnataka. Although the UPA government presented it in Parliament, it could not be passed.

Shetty credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the bill’s eventual passage, stating that it represents justice after a long wait.

She added that under Modi’s leadership, women’s empowerment has gained new momentum, citing initiatives like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ and opportunities for women in the defense sector as examples.

She also praised former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for implementing 50% reservation for women in local bodies.

She expressed hope that Parliament will continue to make positive decisions in favor of women, encouraging women from all parties to rise above political differences to benefit from this initiative.

It is noteworthy that during the three-day special session of Parliament that began on Thursday, the government introduced amendments to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023,’ aimed at expediting the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

However, opposition parties have raised questions regarding the increase in the number of seats and its connection to new delimitation.
