Hyderabad, March 8: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the newly renovated Telangana Legislative Council building on Sunday within the assembly complex. This historic structure previously served as the assembly building during the era of the erstwhile Hyderabad state. It will now function as the Telangana Legislative Council.
On Saturday, it was officially announced that the Telangana Legislative Council will commence its meetings in the newly constructed council chamber located within the legislative assembly complex.
According to the Telangana Gazette, the existing council chamber and associated offices will be relocated to the renovated council building. All future sessions and regular operations of the council will take place in this new facility, including the budget session.
Since 2018, the council has been operating from the council hall situated within the grand Jubilee Hall complex adjacent to the assembly premises. Following the bifurcation in 2014, the council hall was allocated to Andhra Pradesh. After Andhra Pradesh moved its capital to Amaravati, the council hall was handed over to Telangana.
The old assembly building, which had been used as the Andhra Pradesh assembly since 2014, has now been refurbished for the Telangana Legislative Council.
The Revanth Reddy government undertook the restoration of this historic building to unify both the assembly and council within the same complex. The renovation took 18 months, with the state government investing ₹30 crore in the project. This building is an example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, where legislative work was conducted during the Nizam era when Hyderabad was a princely state.
After the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956, this building served as the assembly. However, its use ceased after the inauguration of a new assembly building in 1985.
Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in June 2014, this structure was allocated to the Andhra Pradesh assembly. After the assembly’s relocation to Amaravati, the historic building fell into disuse and gradually deteriorated.
After the Congress party came to power in 2023, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy decided to restore this historic building for the Legislative Council.
The restoration was carried out in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC). It included advanced drainage systems, premium flooring, updated electrical systems, and separate rooms for the Chief Minister, Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and secretarial staff, along with a media hall.
The government plans to utilize the existing Jubilee Hall for official events. Additionally, there are plans to create a new central hall for joint sessions of both houses.
