Mumbai, June 25: The political discourse has intensified regarding the inclusion of chapters on the Emergency in NCERT’s Class 9 textbooks. This follows a meeting between Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs and the Lok Sabha Speaker, where they demanded action against rebel legislators under the anti-defection law. NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad and Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe have both shared their responses to these developments.
Awhad stated that teaching about the Emergency is not inappropriate, as it is a significant part of the nation’s history. He emphasized that history should not be limited to one perspective; it must include the roles of all individuals and events that influenced the freedom struggle and the political history of the country.
He further noted that it is essential to document who supported British rule, who opposed the 1942 Quit India Movement, and who sought forgiveness from the British. The public has the right to know the roles played by various figures in the country’s history. Awhad also remarked that the Emergency was a mistake, a sentiment acknowledged by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In response to the Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs’ meeting with the Lok Sabha Speaker to demand action against rebel leaders and express hope for justice, Awhad reacted sharply. He sarcastically questioned, “Does Om Birla have any connection with justice?”
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe supported NCERT’s decision, asserting that the Emergency was a period in Indian democracy marked by a near-dictatorship. During that time, individuals were arrested without clear reasons, and civil liberties were curtailed. It is crucial for students to be informed about the Emergency to understand the conditions that prevailed during the Congress government’s tenure. Such historical chapters help the new generation grasp the importance of democratic values and constitutional institutions.
Regarding the expectation of justice from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Gorhe expressed confidence in his experience, stating that any decision made will adhere to rules and procedures. She expressed faith that the Speaker would make a fair decision.
