Kolkata, February 21: A primary school teacher in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, has been arrested for allegedly firing shots at children playing outside his home, injuring one child. The police confirmed the arrest on Saturday.

According to reports, the accused teacher, Samir Kumar Mandal, lives next to a large playground in Banipur village. On Friday afternoon, around 10 to 12 children were playing cricket and football as usual. During the game, the ball hit the door and wall of Mandal’s house several times. Reportedly, the teacher lost his temper and fired five to six rounds from his gun towards the children in the field.

A friend of the injured child told the media, “We were playing. While playing, the ball hit Mandal’s house wall multiple times. Suddenly, I saw him shooting at us from the roof. The bullets whizzed past some of us, and one hit our friend.”

The police stated, “The injured child fell to the ground and started screaming. People nearby rushed to help and took him to the hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.”

Officers from the Raghunathganj police station arrived at the scene after receiving information. The teacher was arrested on Friday night. Authorities confirmed that he teaches at Umarpur Primary School.

Samir has admitted to his actions. In an interview with local media, he claimed, “I shot in the air, not at anyone. I don’t understand how the bullet hit the child.”

The injured child’s father expressed disbelief, saying, “How can a teacher shoot at children like this?” He demanded strict punishment for the accused.

An official reported that an advanced air gun was used in the incident. Investigations are underway to determine whether the teacher had a license for the gun. However, the accused’s family claims that the air gun was purchased from Kolkata with the necessary documentation. The police are currently investigating the entire matter.
