Tarun Khanna: Choosing Roles with Intention, Not Just Typecasting as Mahadev

Mumbai, May 5: Actor Tarun Khanna, known for his portrayal of Mahadev, has opened up about his role choices. Despite being typecast due to his repeated performances as the deity, he emphasizes that he selects these roles thoughtfully.

In a recent interview, Khanna shared how playing Lord Shiva has transformed his life. He has portrayed Mahadev over 400 times across various shows, including popular mythological series like “Karm Phal Data Shani,” “Radha Krishna,” “Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki,” “Devi Adi Parashakti,” “Santoshi Maa,” and “Param Avatar Shri Krishna.” He has also taken on the role in the Telugu film “Akhanda 2” and the theater play “Hamare Ram.”

Khanna believes that audiences enjoy seeing him as Mahadev, which is why producers frequently cast him. He acknowledges that he has become typecast but sees no issue with it. “There’s no doubt that I have been typecast, and to be honest, I choose this role with care. Understanding the strength of a character is crucial for an actor. It is challenging to find a character more powerful than Mahadev. Regardless of the story, Mahadev remains the most powerful character,” he stated.

He noted that portraying Mahadev has instilled patience in him and revived his inherent humility. Reflecting on his role in the show “Shiv Shakti,” he mentioned that he was initially offered the role of Indra, which he declined. However, due to family ties with Swastik Productions, he later agreed to play Mahadev.

Khanna also shared his views on mythological shows, stating that no matter how impressive the VFX and costumes are, a lack of emotional depth can lead to failure. Many VFX-heavy shows have flopped due to this absence of emotion. He concluded, “Mahadev is not just about costumes; he is a divine character that requires true dedication and commitment.”
