Chengdu, China, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Fifteen-year-old Tanvi Patra secured the Under-17 girls’ singles title at the Badminton Asia Under-17 and Under-15 Junior Championship held in Chengdu, China, on September 13. In an all-Indian final, Patra triumphed over her compatriot Shaina Manimuthu with scores of 11-15, 15-10, and 15-12.
This victory adds to Patra’s impressive achievements in the 2026 season. Earlier this year, she claimed her first international title at the Pontianak International Challenge and also won the All India Junior Under-19 Badminton Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru. Now, she has added the continental Under-17 title to her collection, following her Under-15 Asian championship win in 2024.
As the second seed, Patra faced a challenging draw to reach the final. After receiving a bye in the first round, she began her campaign with a hard-fought victory against China’s Zhou Jing Li, winning 18-16, 12-15, 15-13 in a grueling three-game match.
Patra then defeated Japan’s Shizuku Kashio 15-9, 15-12, before achieving a commanding win over China’s Lin Heng Men in the quarter-finals with scores of 15-8, 15-8. In the semi-finals, she maintained her composure in a tense deciding game, overcoming China’s Yu Ying Gui 15-9, 11-15, 15-11.
On the other side of the draw, sixth-seeded Manimuthu also had a remarkable journey, setting the stage for the Bengaluru final rematch. Her path included a powerful quarter-final victory against Japan’s Yui Itabashi and a disciplined semi-final win over another Japanese player, Anon Okimoto, with scores of 15-13, 15-12, showcasing her patience in the final moments.
Following Diksha Sudhakar’s historic victory in 2025, Patra’s win marks India’s consecutive triumph in the Under-17 girls’ singles category. Manimuthu, who won the Under-15 Asian title last year, put forth a stellar performance, securing the silver medal.
In the Under-15 category, the boys’ doubles pair of Aditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma added a bronze medal to their tally. They faced defeat in the semi-finals against the Taiwanese duo of Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Ho, with scores of 5-15, 10-15, concluding the team’s successful continental campaign.
