Chennai, July 15: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay assured full support for Kerala’s intensified anti-drug campaign during a meeting with Kerala’s Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday.
The primary aim of this meeting was to strengthen coordination between the states, particularly along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, to combat drug trafficking and distribution.
Speaking to reporters after the discussions, Chennithala stated that the Chief Minister agreed to collaborate with Kerala to dismantle organized drug networks and prevent the cross-border movement of narcotics.
According to the minister, Vijay accepted an invitation to visit Kerala and participate in the state’s anti-drug awareness campaign.
Chennithala noted that the Chief Minister’s involvement would aid in raising awareness among students and youth, who are increasingly targeted by organized drug syndicates.
He mentioned that Malayalam actor Mohanlal is serving as the ambassador for Kerala’s anti-drug campaign, emphasizing the need for participation from political leaders, educational institutions, law enforcement agencies, and the general public in the fight against drugs.
Under the shared strategy, security will be enhanced along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border to prevent drug movement and eliminate smuggling routes between the states.
Chennithala also revealed that a recent meeting of the Directors General of Police (DGPs) from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry resulted in a joint action plan against drugs.
Kerala’s anti-drug initiative, named ‘Operation Storm,’ has garnered significant public support and has become a mass movement. This initiative aims to identify and dismantle drug trafficking networks operating throughout the state.
Highlighting progress made so far, Chennithala noted that enforcement agencies have seized narcotics worth approximately ₹700 million during raids conducted under ‘Operation Storm.’ He added that Kerala police have begun discussions with neighboring states to share intelligence, conduct joint operations, and strengthen coordinated enforcement measures.
Emphasizing that no single state can tackle the drug problem alone, he stated that continuous cooperation among southern states is essential to break the supply chain and protect youth from drug addiction. He expressed confidence that collaboration between Kerala and Tamil Nadu would significantly strengthen the fight against narcotics in the region.
