Chennai, July 15: A video surfaced on social media just hours after the Tamil Nadu government launched a special WhatsApp helpline for reporting corruption complaints against government officials. The footage allegedly shows an official from the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) accepting cash from a contractor.
The emergence of this video has ignited a political controversy and intensified discussions about corruption in local bodies. However, the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
In the video, NV Veera, the president of the Mambakkam Panchayat and the joint secretary of TVK in Chengalpattu East, is reportedly seen receiving ₹30,000 in cash from a contractor. During the conversation, another individual can allegedly be heard stating that ₹1 lakh had already been transferred. It is believed that the contractor secretly recorded this footage.
According to the viral video, the cash was reportedly linked to the approval of the contractor’s bill after completing road construction work. There has been no official confirmation regarding the circumstances of the transaction, nor has any formal complaint been publicly disclosed.
This case is particularly significant as it coincides with the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to strengthen its anti-corruption campaign. On the same day the video emerged, the government issued directives to install awareness boards in all government offices, district collectorates, local bodies, and public enterprises.
These boards will display messages in both Tamil and English, stating that bribery is a crime, along with the WhatsApp helpline number for the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) at 94981 80936.
The Chief Secretary has instructed all government departments, district collectors, and heads of public enterprises to place these boards in prominent locations. The initiative aims to encourage citizens to report bribery and corruption cases directly to the DVAC via WhatsApp for swift action.
Following the video’s circulation, there has been extensive discussion on social media regarding this matter. Opposition parties and numerous users have questioned the government’s anti-corruption claims, demanding a fair and thorough investigation into the allegations.
Currently, neither the Tamil Nadu government nor the leadership of TVK has issued an official statement regarding the video’s authenticity or any legal, departmental, or disciplinary action against the involved official.
This situation is drawing public attention, particularly as it arises alongside the government’s new anti-corruption initiative.
