Chennai, March 15: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on Sunday, highlighting the participation of 7,617 registered third gender voters among the state’s 5.67 crore electorate.
Voting across all 234 assembly constituencies is set for April 23, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The electoral process will be completed by May 6, setting the stage for a significant political contest in one of India’s most politically active states.
According to the latest voter list released by the commission, Tamil Nadu has a total of 5.67 crore voters, which includes approximately 4.63 lakh persons with disabilities and around 3.99 lakh senior citizens aged over 85, all expected to participate in the democratic process.
A notable aspect of the electoral data is the large number of young voters. The commission reported that 12.51 lakh first-time voters aged 18 to 19 will be eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming assembly elections. This figure is the highest among the four states holding elections this year, underscoring the growing influence of young voters in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
The Election Commission also reiterated that, as per constitutional provisions, 44 seats in the 234 assembly constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Castes, and two seats for Scheduled Tribes.
To ensure smooth and accessible voting, the commission has established 75,032 polling stations across Tamil Nadu. They have set a maximum limit of 1,200 voters per polling station to facilitate crowd management and voter convenience.
Officials reported that a detailed rationalization process was followed when determining polling station locations. This process involved setting up additional polling stations in high-rise residential buildings, collective housing societies, community halls in Resident Welfare Association (RWA) colonies, and densely populated urban slum areas to ensure easy access for voters.
With the announcement of the election schedule, political parties are expected to accelerate their campaign preparations and finalize candidates for this highly anticipated assembly election in Tamil Nadu.
