Suvendu Adhikari to Take Oath as West Bengals First BJP Chief Minister

New Delhi, May 9: Suvendu Adhikari is set to take the oath as West Bengal’s first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President Nitin Gadkari, and Chief Ministers from all NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

On Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah officially announced Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking the first BJP-led government in the state since independence.

This decision was made during a meeting with newly elected BJP legislators following the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on May 4.

During the meeting, Adhikari was officially endorsed as the leader of the BJP legislative party in the West Bengal Assembly, confirming his position as the next Chief Minister.

Home Minister Amit Shah stated, “The process for selecting the leader of the party’s legislative group in the state assembly has been completed. A total of eight proposals were received, all naming only one candidate. Sufficient time was given for any alternative nominations, but none were proposed. Therefore, I have put forward Suvendu Adhikari’s name as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.”

This time, Suvendu Adhikari was elected from both his home constituency of Nandigram in East Midnapore and the Bhawanipur constituency in South Kolkata. In Bhawanipur, he defeated his predecessor and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by over 15,000 votes.

Adhikari first defeated Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 Assembly elections from Nandigram. He has now solidified his position as the consensus candidate to lead West Bengal’s first BJP government after once again ousting Banerjee in the 2026 elections.
