Tejashwi Yadav Seeks NHRC Intervention in Madhubani Youths Death in Police Custody

Patna, August 23: Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the acting president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, has called for the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene in the case of 19-year-old Raushan Yadav, who died in police custody in Madhubani. Yadav has written to the NHRC chairman, urging the commission to take cognizance of the matter and ensure strict action against the responsible officials.

On Saturday, Tejashwi shared the letter on the social media platform ‘X’, alleging that Raushan Yadav was brutally murdered by the police while in custody. He emphasized that he would raise this issue on every platform to secure justice for the victim’s family. In his letter to the NHRC, Tejashwi stated that Raushan had been in judicial custody since May 27, 2026, and was found dead on August 10 in the Mandal Jail located in Rampur, Madhubani district.

According to jail officials, his death was due to hanging. However, the family has questioned this claim, citing multiple injury marks on his body. They also alleged that no written notification of his arrest was provided to the nearest relatives. In his letter, Tejashwi mentioned that the Madhubani administration indicated that a magistrate’s inquiry would be conducted in accordance with NHRC guidelines, and a report would be submitted.

He noted that the deceased came from a poor family, which includes a widowed mother and two sisters. Tejashwi has requested the NHRC to seek reports from the Director General of Police and the Director General of Prisons in Bihar. He also called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Raushan’s arrest and death. He insisted that the NHRC should verify whether its guidelines were followed in cases of death in custody.

In his letter, the RJD leader demanded an investigation into various aspects, including CCTV footage from two different police stations, mandatory health checks, notification to the family, and videography of the post-mortem. He urged that the reports of the post-mortem, death review, and magistrate inquiry be submitted to the NHRC within a specified timeframe, along with continuous updates for the victim’s family.

Tejashwi also criticized the Bihar government, alleging that the breakdown of law and order has led to rampant corruption and unaccountability among officials. He stated that the sacrifice of innocent citizens would not be tolerated at any cost.
