Rome, June 1: The Italian Ministry of Health has announced an ongoing investigation into a suspected case of Ebola in Cagliari. According to local media, the patient recently returned from Congo and is currently in the capital of Sardinia.
The individual is exhibiting symptoms of the disease, and an Ebola test has been conducted. Samples for this test will be analyzed at the Spallanzani Institute in Rome.
Currently, the patient is isolated in a hospital.
As reported by the Adnkronos news agency, the health ministry stated it is in contact with local health agencies in Sardinia and the Spallanzani Institute, continuously monitoring the situation.
The patient is admitted to the infectious diseases department at the Santissima Trinità Hospital. Samples taken to confirm the presence of the virus have been sent to Rome via air ambulance.
All safety measures for such cases have been implemented at the Mirionis Hospital.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office has indicated that the Italian government has appealed to Europe to enhance border monitoring and coordination to prevent the spread of Ebola.
The Prime Minister’s office also announced that a team of experts from the Spallanzani Infectious Diseases Hospital in Rome is being dispatched to Congo. This team will assist in managing the Ebola outbreak and strengthen virus monitoring and control efforts.
The statement emphasized, “Italy believes that there is an urgent need to focus on the recent outbreak of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus (BVD strain) in Congo and neighboring Uganda in Central Africa.”
For this reason, Prime Minister Meloni has written to European Council President Nikos Christodoulides, European Council President Antonio Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The aim is to urge the establishment of shared rules for monitoring individuals arriving directly or indirectly from affected areas while respecting national health security rights, and to improve coordination in border surveillance.
The statement concluded that this will help strengthen safety measures across Europe.
